Debre Libanose and Portugal Bridge
Perched on the edge of a dramatic gorge in Ethiopia’s central highlands, Debre Libanos and the nearby Portuguese Bridge offer a stunning blend of spiritual history and architectural mystery. The monastery, founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot, remains one of the country’s most holy sites, drawing pilgrims to its serene cliffside setting.
Just a short walk away lies the so-called Portuguese Bridge, which spans a narrow neck of the Blue Nile basin. While local legend often attributes the structure to 16th-century Portuguese explorers, historians generally agree it was built in the 17th century by Ethiopian stonemasons during the Gondarine era. Regardless of its disputed origins, the bridge provides a breathtaking vantage point for the Gur River waterfall, which plunges into the depths of the canyon—especially during the rainy season when the mist rises to meet the resident Gelada baboons grazing nearby.
Cultural & Historical Activities
Ethiopia offers a profound journey through time, blending ancient civilizations with vibrant, living traditions. History enthusiasts can explore the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Lalibela, home to 12th-century rock-hewn monolithic churches, and the ancient city of Aksum, which marks the heart of the Aksumite Empire and is said to house the Ark of the Covenant. In the “Camelot of Africa,” Gondar, visitors can wander through the 17th-century Fasil Ghebbi royal enclosure and its sprawling stone castles. Cultural life is equally immersive, especially during the colorful Timkat (Epiphany) or Meskel festivals, where thousands gather in traditional white habesha dress for spiritual processions and chanting. From the bustling alleys of Addis Mercato, Africa’s largest open-air market, to the centuries-old “Hyena Man” ritual in the walled city of Harar, Ethiopia provides a unique cultural tapestry that remains fiercely distinct from the rest of the continent.
