Overview
This 7-day Omo Valley Cultural Tour takes you deep into southern Ethiopia, one of Africa’s most culturally diverse regions. Traveling through Hawassa and Arba Minch, the journey combines scenic Rift Valley landscapes, lakes, and national parks with immersive encounters among indigenous tribes of the Omo Valley. This tour offers a rare opportunity to experience ancient traditions, colorful markets, and daily life that has remained unchanged for centuries, guided by knowledgeable local experts.
Itinerary
Drive south through the Great Rift Valley, stopping at scenic viewpoints and Lake Ziway. Continue to Hawassa, located on the shores of Lake Hawassa. Enjoy a lakeside walk and birdwatching.
Overnight: Hawassa
Visit the local fish market and lakeside area in Hawassa before driving to Arba Minch. En route, enjoy views of Rift Valley lakes and countryside.
Overnight: Arba Minch
Morning visit to Dorze village, famous for its towering bamboo houses and traditional weaving. In the afternoon, enjoy a boat trip on Lake Chamo to see crocodiles, hippos, and birdlife.
Overnight: Arba Minch
Drive to the Konso Cultural Landscape (UNESCO World Heritage Site), known for its terraced hills and unique wooden statues (waka). Continue to Jinka, the gateway to the Omo Valley tribes.
Overnight: Jinka
Early morning visit to Mago National Park to meet the Mursi tribe, known for their lip plates and strong cultural identity. Return to Jinka in the afternoon.
Overnight: Jinka
Drive to Turmi via Key Afer market, where multiple tribes gather on market days (Banna, Ari, Tsemay). Visit the Hamer tribe, famous for their body decoration and bull-jumping ceremony (if available).
Overnight: Turmi
Visit the Karo tribe along the Omo River, known for elaborate body painting. Drive back to Arba Minch and take a domestic flight or long drive back to Addis Ababa. End of tour.
